Why saving a GIF from X is harder than it looks

Here's the catch: the GIFs you see on X aren't really GIF files. When someone posts a GIF, X turns it into a short looping video. So if you try to save it the usual way, you end up with a video file, or nothing at all.

This tool turns it back into a proper .gif file. Paste the tweet link, tap Download GIF, and you get an animation that loops on its own in chat apps, forums, slides and anywhere else that takes GIFs.

How to download a GIF from Twitter

Look for the small GIF label on the post, then:
1

Copy the tweet link

Tap the share icon under the post with the GIF and pick Copy link. On a computer, you can copy the address bar.
2

Paste and tap Download

Paste the link into the box above and tap Download. The GIF from the post shows up below.
3

Tap Download GIF

Save the file. It'll end in .gif and loop wherever you open it.

What you get

  • A real .gif file: Not a video renamed to look like one, so it works in places that only accept GIFs.
  • Loops on its own: No play button, no sound, just the animation repeating like a GIF should.
  • Need a regular video instead?: For clips with sound, the video downloader saves an MP4.

GIF or video: which one is it?

On X, GIFs carry a small GIF label in the corner, play on a loop and have no sound. If the clip has a play button, a timer, or sound, it's a normal video, and the Twitter video downloader is the right tool for it.

Why the .gif file is bigger than you'd expect

The GIF format is old. It handles a limited range of colors and doesn't compress motion well, so a .gif is often several times larger than the same clip as a video, and fine gradients can look a little grainy. That's normal and the price of a file that works everywhere. If size matters more than compatibility, save the MP4 from the video downloader instead.

Saving the GIF on your phone

On iPhone, the .gif goes to the Files app. Open it, tap Share, then Save Image to add it to Photos, where it'll play in the Animated album. On Android, it lands in Downloads and shows up in most gallery apps.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't my GIF have sound?

GIFs never have sound, on X or anywhere else. If the clip you're after has audio, it's a video post. Use the video downloader for that.

Can I save GIFs from the X GIF picker or search?

Only if they're in a post. This tool needs the link to a tweet that contains the GIF.

The GIF looks a bit grainy. Can I fix that?

Not much, unfortunately. That's down to the GIF format's limited colors. For the cleanest image, save the clip as an MP4 with the Twitter video downloader.

Can I download a GIF from a private account?

No. GIFs from protected accounts are only visible to approved followers, and no outside tool can get them.
